No green screen, no manual masking
A chroma key removes one colour, so it needs a green or blue backdrop and even lighting. AI matting works the other way round: the model recognises the subject, whether it is a person, a pet or a product, and separates it from whatever is behind it, frame by frame. You do not draw masks or track anything by hand.
It works best when the subject is clearly in front of the background. Fine flyaway hair can come out softer than in the original, and things you can see through, such as smoke or glass, are usually removed with the background.
